Matt McKay - Suite For Flute

A highly accomplished musician, Matt McKay is an in demand Flautist and Sax player on the London music scene.

Matt approached me to write a piece of music to demonstrate his flute playing as part of his Doctorate. We discussed (over a beer or two) his preferences and tastes. The piece was also to try to explore new ideas for Flute which is easier said than done.

I had the idea of employing a single theme or motif over 3 movements. This became the starting point for the piece. A simple 5 note melody which could be explored and developed.

The first movement "One Eleven", is a simple ballad. Almost classical in areas, it employs a wide range of Matt's technique.

Next was "Nearly There". We took the brief "to explore new aspects of flute" quite literally. Everything is played on the flute. From the kick drum and hats, to the main melody which is played on a Double Native American Flute.

The third movement is in the style of Tom Scott. Again, the same melodic idea but this time employing the flute where one would normally expect to hear a sax.
